A new 28,000 square metre regional mall - Merino Mall - opened its doors in Ermelo on 28 October 2022, featuring its own solar plant to help keep lights on and businesses trading.
Meanwhile, three others - Mamaila Mall in Limpopo, Matsamo Mall in Mpumalanga, and KwaBhaca Mall in the Eastern Cape - all opened their doors for trade at around exactly the same time.
Mamaila Mall
Construction of Mamaila Mall kicked off in 2021, with the 12,500 square metre retail development opening its doors to the public on 29 October 2022.
The project was handled by Pretoria-based development company, GMI Property group, which specialises in rural retail developments.
The mall is expected to serve over 86,000 people from almost 30,000 households in the catchment area, and has tenants such as Shoprite, OK Furniture, PEP, Cahsbuild, Ackermans and more.
According to Leads2Business, the mall is valued in the region of R30 to R60 million.
KwaBhaca Mall
KwaBhaca Mall is a new addition to Eastern Cape's mix of shopping centres, having opened in Mount Frere on 28 October.
The double-level mall covers almost 19,000 square metres, and its tenant mix includes the likes of Woolworths, Shoprite, Boxer, Boxer Liquor, Shoprite Liquor, Capitec, Clicks, Wimpy, TotalSports and Truworths.
The development is 60% owned by Exemplar REITail, and was built in partnership with AJ Property Holdings.
According to Leads2Business, the mall is valued at over R200 million.
Matsamo Mall
The smallest of the new malls at 7,600 square metres, Matsamo Mall in Buffelspruit opened its doors on 26 October 2022.
The mall is a convenient, central retail hub with tenants such as Shoprite, Shoprite Liquor, Ackermans, Mr Price, Jet, Pep Home, Totalsports and Markham.
According to the Moolman Group, who developed the centre, there is a currently a huge undersupply of retail facilities in the area, with the mall being the only formal retail facility in the region which has more than 26,000 households.
According to Leads2Business, the mall is valued at between R60 million and R200 million.
Merino Mall
Merino Mall is the largest of the new shopping malls launched in the past week, serving as a regional mall in Ermelo. It opened on 28 October.
At 28,600 square metres, the mall marks the first shopping centre of its substantial size to be developed within a 100-kilometre radius in the area.
Merino Mall's retail mix comprises 90 stores with anchors Checkers, Pick n Pay, Woolworths and Clicks, as well as the first Crazy Plastics and Dis-Chem in the area. Other retail firsts for Ermelo include Cape Union Mart, PNA, @Home, Queenspark, Old Khaki, Crazy Pets and Refinery.
The shopping centre also has a fashion node, banking facilities and restaurants - as well as a solar plant to keep businesses operating during load shedding.
According to Leads2Business, the mall is valued at between R60 million and R200 million.
